Sustainable Agriculture for Puerto Rico
Working with six schools to strengthen and expand an Agroecology Program
For this project, Alelí Environmental has partnered with Plenitud PR and the Luis Muñoz Marín High School (LMMHS) in Añasco to strengthen their agroecology education programs and expand efforts in five schools located in the west-central region of Puerto Rico. Our objectives are to:
Install an aquaponic system to grow fresh water fish and vegetables and train the students and teachers of LMMHS about the maintenance and use of the system. Alelí will purchase two 1,000-gallon tanks and assorted pipes for the construction of a rainwater collection system at the school;
Build upon education efforts by expanding a school garden, leading field visits with students to farms practicing agroecology principles on the island and providing teachers' workshops to help them integrate the principles of agro-ecology into different subject matters;
Monthly environmental presentations and workshops will be held with the parents of LMMHS students to reinforce environmentally-friendly practices at home;
Five schools will receive a sub-grant to help them start their own small-scale agro-ecology project at their own school, visit and learn from LMMHS program, and install their own rainwater collection system.
This project is sponsored by a federal grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Project duration: 2018 - 2020.
